Mohali News - Mohali gets Biotech institute, bioprocessing unit

The Union Cabinet today okayed setting up of a National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute and a bioprocessing unit in Knowledge City at Mohali in Punjab at a cost of Rs 380 crore by 2012-13.

 

"Both will be autonomous institutions under the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology," Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told reporters after the cabinet meeting.

 

"The central institute will have a major role in implementing relevant biotechnology programmes in the state and generating the required human resource," he said.

 

This is expected to give a push to need-based research in agriculture biotechnology, food science and technnology and nutritional science and technology to address the problems of the state and the country.
